This class will provide students with basics arts and crafts skills with different materials. Projects include origami animals, holiday cards, jewelry, and more. The students will be able to make their own creative gifts for teachers, family, and friends in the future. A $15 of material fee will be payable to the instructor at the beginning of the semester.

Yuan Kang and Cathy Deng are both students at the Acton Boxborough Regional High School. They have previous experience in crafting and working with children, and have been teaching this class at ACLS for the past year.

Do you want your kids to be stronger both in physical and in mental? Do you want your kids always want to win and never easily give up? Do you want your kids know some basketball skills and know how to play well in a team? If any answer is "YES", your kids need to join this exciting basketball class, which provides following trainings:

Training for playing techniques:
    How to hold, catch, dribble, pass the ball;
    How to move in to positions without the ball;
    How to shoot the ball;
    Techniques on jump shoot and three-step shoot from different angles.

Training for game strategy:
    Offense, defense, and rebounding;
    How to play in Forward, Guard or Center positions.

Officiated game playing:
    One on One half-court game;
    Five on Five full-court game.

Class Name: Brush Painting

The class teaches students how to use brush, the traditional Chinese writing and painting tool, to depict objects of daily life. The aim is to stimulate students?interest in their environment and to train and develop their skills in close observation and in expression with painting. The reason that the class is not named 'Traditional Chinese Painting' or 'Watercolor Painting' is because traditional Chinese painting techniques and colors, such as ink, will not be used.

During this class, focus will be on developing the students' creativity in their drawing. Each week the class will begin with a small drawing "competition" to test the students' creativity in developing and complete and creative piece. Following that, they will learn to draw a composition that I have prepared for them. Drawings range from Cartoons, to anime, and sometimes the students will get to share their own creations to the class to be learned.Typically we will use colored pencils that they either bring themselves or ones that are provided. A sketchpad and pencils are required.

Joanna is a junior at Acton Boxborough High School and has been taking various art classes since she was six. Currently, she takes a drawing and painting class at school to help develop her skills even more in art. Previously, she has been a teacher assistant for the chinese brush painting class. She loves kids and enjoys working with them.

 

 

***Class name: Chinese Martial Arts for Children

Wushu teaches children to try their best through training. They learn how to overcome challenges and experience victories, giving them the confidence and spirit to be their best in their martial arts, their school and home. This class develops: flexibility, strength, self-defense, respect, self-esteem, and coordination.

Requirements: baggy, loose fitting clothing (sweatpants and t-shirt to start).

Instructor: Lee, Kevin

Kevin Lee is a five year student of WuShu/KungFu at the Chinese Martial Arts Health and Fitness Center of Acton. He recently attained a blue belt (Chinese Martial Art School level 6). He has also performed in numerous shows, and has won 2 medals from the Greater Boston Chinese Martial Arts Tournament in 2004. He has been a TA of ACLS Chinese Martial Art class since 2003 during which he improved his teaching and organization abilities. He'd like to pass his passion towards WuShu as a form of Chinese culture to other students through teaching.

1985年毕业于广西艺术学院。广西音乐协会会员。广西通俗音乐学会理事。获中央电视台第三届青年歌手大奖赛广西赛区通俗唱法一等奖。获中国西南六大城市歌手大赛优秀奖。广西"三月三"大型演出中获优秀演员奖。桂林独秀歌星大奖赛获一等奖。广西音像出版社将她演唱的一些歌曲录入了磁带。曾多次参加国内的许多大型演出并得到好评。她被列入<桂林艺术家大辞典> 和<中国当代艺术界名人录>。

 

 

 

Class name: Creative Pencil Drawing and Sketching

This class is for children who enjoy any type of drawing or painting and would like to learn more drawing techniques and improve their creativity. The class will cover the basics of drawing principles and techniques; it will encourage students to create their own drawings with the techniques taught in class. The focus of the class will be learning and practicing drawing and sketching with the concept of perspective.

Instructor: Pui-Ying Ching

Pui-Ying has studied drawing and painting with private teachers at at early age, and she has won the first place award at the art exhibition of the university she attended. For more than 30 years she continuously pursued her passion in fine arts. She is also currently teaching a private drawing class. Her specialty is in pencil drawing, pen and ink drawing, and oil painting. She loves to help children, as well as adults, to find enjoyment in drawing and painting.

 

 

Class name: Dancing and Performing for Children

The class introduces basic Chinese folk dance and ballet skill step by step. A small testing may be asked in the very first class. Students will join the ACLS end of year performance on stage. A small fee ($15) will be collected at the beginning of the semester for costume rental or dance stuff to meet class & performance needs. It can be made payable to the instructor at the first class.

Requirement: Bring ballet shoes, dance clothes, and a bottle of water. Have hair in a bun with net.

**Parents of enrolled students are required to sign a Liability Waiver Form at the beginning of the semester.

朱碧云毕业于浙江省 艺术学校舞蹈系, 北京电影学 院表演系. 1980 年主演 中国首部彩色宽银幕古 装聊斋故事电影影片 (胭 脂), 主 演彩色宽银幕京剧老艺人 李万春, 李小春故事电影影片 (. ) 及彩色古装 故事电影影片( 笔中情 ) 6 部影片及三部电视片.

曾工作与 杭州歌舞团, 领舞 <三潭印月 >,获 首届全国舞蹈比赛奖. 1980 入选中央电 视台春节歌舞晚会.

Now Biyun is a mother of two sons, with a nice family in Acton. She has been a dance choreograph and instructor for children and adults in our community since 2002. She started to teach kids dance in ACLS since the first school day. Her dance students (XingJiang Dance) won first place in 2005 and (Spring Tea Dance) won the second place in 2004 at the New England Chinese Dance Competition for 12 years under group dances. Now in 2008 some of her dance students become Chinese dance class TA J .

She has volunteer directed for some of ACLS performance shows since 2003. She is also a volunteer member of the Acton & Boxborough Cultural Council since 2006.

Instructor: Hongwei Gao

Before Immigrating to the United States, Hongwei Gao was a well-known erhu soloist in Northern China, he served as the 1st chair of Song & Dance Ensemble of Jinlin Province. In addition to performing in Greater Boston area (1st chair in both GBCCA Music Ensemble and Xiyangyang Music Ensemble), Mr. Gao also teaches erhu in northern Boston suburbs.

Fencing is one of the five original events in Olympic Games. It was popular among European gentlemen for physical training and nobility cultivation. It? still regarded as a gracious and classy sport today.

Foil, epee, and sabre are the three weapons used in the sport of fencing. It is aimed to train agility, quickness, and subtlety of movement. The sport has been described as ?hess of muscles? suggesting that complicated strategy lies behind the thrusts and parries that punctuate a duel.

To meet interest and demand of ACLS parents and children, Mr. Xing will try every of his effort in delivering the best training of basic and advanced skills of fencing to his students.

Equipment can be purchased through the instructor at the cost of around $160.00.

**Parents of the students are required to sign a Liability Waiver Form at the beginning of the semester.

Instructor: Tungshan Chang

My name is Tung-Shan Chang, but to many of my friends I'm known as Frtiz Chang. I am a competitive member of the United States Fencing Association and a member of the Boston Fencing Club since the early 1970s. I have competed in many NACs (North American Cups) and Nationals and am ranked in top 8 in the U.S. in my age group of men’s foil. I also dabble in saber and epee, which are the two remaining types of fencing.

I have been an amateur fencing coach for about 20 years with experience in teaching the sport to adults and children. If there is any special request, I will conduct the classes in Mandarin. In general, I teach my classes in English, since most students will compete in an English-speaking environment in the U.S. In the late eighties, I was able to interest my three children in fencing. Several years later, they all fenced on the varsity teams of their respective colleges.

 

 

***Class name: Preparations for Competitive Fencing

Prerequisite: Two years of fencing lessons at ACLS or equivalent. In this course, the students will practice bout with electrical equipment. They will learn about the piste and the rules of bout. As they go through each bout, the coach will comment on their techniques and movements. Certain techniques will be reviewed or taught as needed. Each student will also learn how to direct a fencing bout and how to keep score. If possible, one or two field trips will be arranged to visit a local fencing club or a local USFA fencing competition. The ultimate goal of this course is to prepare the students to participate in USFA (United States Fencing Association) competitions. All students will need to purchase electrical equipment. Details for purchasing electrical equipment will be provided at the meeting.

A small fee of $5 per semester will be made payable to the Instructor for maintenance of the electronic scoring machine and other necessary accessories.

Class name: International Chess --- Introduction Level

This class is open for beginning and intermediate level chess players interested in learning chess skills and having fun. We'll learn how the pieces move, simple checkmates, opening strategies, all of the rules, tactics and combinations and much more. We will also teach kids how to record the games and how to review the games. The emphasis is on playing opportunities that will help the students improve. The kids are grouped by ability to keep everyone interested and motivated. As Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan wrote in Inside Chess, "… the best way to get better at chess is to play”. Though no formal learning materials will be provided, we will follow a comprehensive learning book from one of the top international Grandmasters.

I have been studying and playing chess on inter-net for several years. I started to teach my son Chess 3 years ago in addition to his private lessons. He is now ranked in top-25 in New England within his age group. My teaching philosophy is for the kids to have fun playing chess, then review the games and learn from the mistakes.

This class is open for intermediate level and above chess players interested in learning chess skills, having fun, and furthering their general cognitive development. Students are assumed to have a good understanding of the moves and rules of chess. Class will consist of a short lecture on elementary tactics or a similar topic and then supervised play. Homework will be assigned.

Instructor: David West

He has played and taught chess for many years. His high school chess team tied for 3rd best in the nation and he reached the nationally-ranked “expert” class. He is the founder and chess coach in Carlisle Chess Club.

 

 

Class name: Introduction to Music I

Class Description:


This class is designed to teach the basics of music as a whole rather than learning music theory, voice, or instruments separately in a traditional manner.  While children are singing, clapping, dancing, listening, playing instruments, and drawing notes, they will comprehend many different aspects of music such as melody, rhythm, theory, writing, and ensemble.  No musical background is necessary.

Instructor: Grace Choi

Grace Choi is a Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory and Composition at Brandeis University. She earned her Masters degree from the Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins University. She is a composer, pianist, organist, conductor, arranger, and music theory teacher. Ms. Choi has received numerous awards and fellowships including ASCAP/SCI Commission First Prize, Margaret Lee Crofts Fellowship from Tanglewood Music Center, Christoph and Stephan Kaske Fellowship from Wellesley Conference, National Association of Composers USA, Virginia Carty Delillo Composition Prize from Peabody Conservatory, Grand Prize of Contemporary Music Society of Seoul, Korea, Brandeis University, ACDA, France, Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt, Honors from Ibla Foundation, Italy and NACUSA.

 

 

Class Name: Math Masters I, II, III
Class limit:

Class Description:

Students are required to take an evaluation test on the first day of school, and will be assigned to different levels based on their test result. Level I for grade 2-3, level II for grade 4-5, level III for grade 6-7.


Math Master is for students who enjoy Math and want to exercise their knowledge and curiosity. The curriculum focuses on problem-solving and creative thinking. Students will learn and practice problem-solving strategies that are useful at any grade level and on any subject matter. Classes are exercise oriented, rather than instruction oriented, so as to maximize student-student and student-teacher interaction. Great effort has been put to construct the non-routine materials from all kinds of sources so that the problems are interesting and challenging, yet still accessible to students using grade-level mathematics. The program is not trying to teach students with materials ahead of their grades but to emphasize on their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Zhidong Lu: Lives in Boxborough and has fully enjoyed teaching Math Master for 4 years in ACLS. Working in analytical field, he enjoys math, soccer, and coaching in his spare time. Serving for the community is a great satisfaction for him.

 

 

Class name: Ping Pong for Children

Ping Pong (aka Table Tennis) is a good mental and physical exercise for different age groups, and the benefit can last a life time. For young players, it can improve their coordination of eyes, hands, and the entire body, and enhance their capabilities for concentration and competition. Ping Pong is fun and safe to play, either indoors or outdoors; It's also a wonderful game to play among family members and friends, especially during the long, harsh winter.

The class will provide new or experienced students with basic knowledge about the sport, as well as rules and regulations for single and double games. All students will learn several basic skills of serving and returning the ball. Then students will be divided into three groups most suitable for their skill levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). They will learn and practice some playing tactics such as driving, pushing, blocking, attacking and looping.

Requirement: Each student needs to bring his/her own Ping Pong paddle.

Instructor: Xingchun Owen Hu

Mr. Hu is a long time Ping Pong player, father of two boys and owner of an insurance agency. As one of the earliest member of the ACLS Ping Pong Club, he enjoys playing Ping Pong on a regular basis. He has taught this class since 2004 and loves to share his experience of and passion for the sport with his students.

Instructor: Lu, Lucy

Lucy Lu is a professional musician and music educator from China, she was Graduate from GanSu Art School in China, Lucy was the recipient of the Chinese Young Artists Award in Pipa Solo. She studied with the distinguished master Lin Shicheng(林时诚), and the celebrated Pipa soloist Liu Dehai(刘德海), after she graduated and taught Pipa in the Gansu Art School for many years, she was a committee Chinese Traditional music association in Gansu Province China. Lucy moved to the U. S. in 1990 and has been performed broadly in the New England area and has taught at Pipa around the Boston.

The main objective of this class is to help the students become familiar with the new SAT test style and try to improve their skills in solving the SAT questions. This class covers only the mathematical area of the new SAT tests and we will discuss different topics in each week throughout the semester. By the end of the semester, the students will learn some strategy and SAT problem solving skills to solve all kinds of SAT problems and also the students will be trained to use logical way to think and solve the SAT problem.

Prerequisite:
Students in this class should have already has some basic knowledge in intermediate algebra and plane geometry. Students from grade 7 or above in English school are highly recommended.

Instructor: Ping Li

As Principal dulcimer player and the first soloist of the China Central National Orchestra of Traditional Music, Ping Li dazzled audiences with her performances for over thirty years in more than twenty countries worldwide.

Her solo and orchestral performances took her across the globe to Berlin, Vienna, Denmark, London, Osaka, and Seoul, as well as Taiwan, Iceland, Sweden Singapore, India, Thailand, Burma, Pakistan, and the United States.

Acclaimed by world famous conductors, composers, and other performers on her musical glamour and quality, she has composed, published, performed and recorded Master works on both the dulcimer and the Zheng.

Ms. Ping Li is the Founder and President of the Boston Art School for Chinese Music. www.pinglimusic.com She is also the Founder and President of The Society for Chinese Instrumental Music in the US. www.scim-us.org

Ping has taught dulcimer, zheng and Chinese percussion to over 100 students in the Boston area since 2000. With a high standard of pedagogy, she teaches every student with passion, impartiality and emphasis on correct technique.

Mother of two, a Software Engineer, Zeming loves to dance and exercise. A key member of the amateur dance group HuaZi, she has choreographed several Chinese folk dances and participated in numerous dance performances. Mr. Hu is an excellent Chinese teacher who has been taught in many Chinese schools such as Lexington Chinese School Andover Chinese School Cambridge Chinese Culture CenterWinchester Chinese School. Mr. Pan start teaching this class last semester. He is very patient, like to answer any questions about English, American culture. Based on the fact that the students do not have too much chance to speak and writing, he always encourage the student to speak English in class and write their project at home.

Instructor: Lois Rosenfeld

Lois Rosenfeld graduated from Hunter College with a major in English and minors in Speech and Education. She earned her Master's degree in counseling, an advanced certification in psychotherapy and Massachusetts' licensure in English as a Second Language.

Lois has been working with first and second language learners of English for over twenty-five years. As a teacher and academic advisor in New York City high schools, Lois became aware of the difficult transition facing second language learners. She is challenged to ease that transition by teaching about the language and customs of the United States and learning about her students' experiences. She has been teaching ESL in local schools and to adult second language learners in companies as well as at her home office and, for ten years, has been tutoring academic subjects. Currently, Lois is an English language consultant for the Hopedale school system.

This class will provide participants an opportunity to enhance their English vocabulary, and sharpen their English pronunciation. Conversation practice, reading, writing and listening skills will be emphasized. A text will be used and will be available through the school. American culture and cross cultural topics will be discussed. All interested adults who feel comfortable moving beyond basic English are welcome.

Instructor: Judy Holmes, Hong Xing

Judy Holmes has a master's degree in English with a concentration in teaching reading. She has 20 years teaching experience that includes both college-level and pre-employment ESL.

Hong Xing was an English teacher and editor of English program. She has been teaching at ACLS for about two years.

This class is for the adults who have no or little background of music to learn how to listen, read, sing, write and play.  Discussions of diversity of musical styles, music history, and instrumentations will be including.  No home assignment will be given.

Instructor: Grace Choi

Grace Choi is a Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory and Composition at Brandeis University. She earned her Masters degree from the Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins University. She is a composer, pianist, organist, conductor, arranger, and music theory teacher. Ms. Choi has received numerous awards and fellowships including ASCAP/SCI Commission First Prize, Margaret Lee Crofts Fellowship from Tanglewood Music Center, Christoph and Stephan Kaske Fellowship from Wellesley Conference, National Association of Composers USA, Virginia Carty Delillo Composition Prize from Peabody Conservatory, Grand Prize of Contemporary Music Society of Seoul, Korea, Brandeis University, ACDA, France, Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt, Honors from Ibla Foundation, Italy and NACUSA.

Class Description:

The class will practice most classic yoga elements, including stretching, balance, power movement, endurance and relaxation. The aim is to help improve flexibility, stability, breathing, body alignment, and concentration, while also burning the fat. You will have better control of the body and mind, reduce the damage of daily stress and improve overall health. No prior yoga experience is required. This class is for beginner to intermediate level. Recommendation will be provided during each movement for both beginners and experienced people throughout the session.

Note: Please dress in comfortable clothes and bring your own yoga mat.

Mother of two energetic young boys and a software engineer, Ally is advocate of healthy living and a big fan of yoga, aerobics, and dancing exercise. After practicing yoga for 6 years and having experience of leading the yoga class at various locations, she wants to share the fun and benefit of yoga with more friends in the Acton Chinese Community.
