Class Description:

This is not an instructive class; rather it focuses on techniques of problem solving. This class is intended for students advanced in math who are interested in math competitions. Students are introduced to popular middle school math competitions including the AMC 8 and Mathcounts. Half of each class will consist of doing actual competition questions designed to be suited for the class time, and the other half will discuss these questions, stressing key concepts and problem-solving strategies. Students’ individual strengths and weaknesses will be analyzed and discussed with students/parents. There will be incentives to encourage kids to do well.

Class Instructor: Steven Tang and Hongyue Shi

Steven Tang
Steven is currently a Pre-calculus Honors student at Nashoba Regional High School. He is an active member of the school math team, and has participated in various math competitions since sixth grade. He is a two-time Massachusetts State Mathcounts top ten winner, and is an AMC 8 perfect scorer. He enjoys problem solving and hopes to instill the joy of math competitions to younger kids.

Hongyue Shi
Hongyue has her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China and PhD in Physical chemistry from Germany. She has volunteered as math tutor in Marlborough public schools and coached the AMSA Mathcounts team winning fourth place team in State Mathcounts competition in 2008.
